Part of being a play therapist is being able to create a sense of safety for the children we work with. In creating this safe space, children are enabled to feel emotions that may usually overwhelm them into a state of hyperarousal or hypoarousal.
The play distracts the brain and distances the child sufficiently from any trauma they may have experienced. The therapist’s use of self calms the nervous system, and the play activates the child’s social engagement system, allowing them to develop social skills and emotional regulation through their play therapy sessions.
